David Weir wins four medals at Beijing

Paralympic athlete David Weir completed his haul of 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze at the Beijing Olympics with another gold, this time for the T54 1500m. His first gold, for the T54 800m was initially withdrawn after an objection but reinstated after the objection was itself withdrawn.

Following his Olympic success in Beijing, we are delighted to announce that David Weir has been made an MBE in the New Years Honours List and has been given Freedom of the City in his hometown of Sutton in Surrey.
 

David Weir sets new world best T54 1500m

British wheelchair racer David Weir set two new world records in an outstanding display at the Meet in the Heat event in Atlanta. The 28-year-old set a new world best in the heats of the T54 1500m, clocking two minutes 55.72 seconds to beat the previous mark of  2:56.61.

He then became the first athlete to break the 10-minute barrier for the 5,000m with a time of 9:54.82. It knocked almost six seconds off Saul Mendoza's record of 10:01.47. Weir was in a good position throughout the race and dug deep in the home straight to snatch victory from his Australian rival Kurt Fearnley by the smallest of margins. A total of six athletes finished under 10 minutes in a thrilling contest.

David also claimed victory in the 400 and 800m.
